A bunion removal, also called hallux valgus removal, involves removing the bony bump that forms on the side of the foot at the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint of the big toe. This is where the bones in the toe connect to the bones in the foot. This deformity can cause pain and can angle the big toe toward other toes. During a bunion removal procedure, the doctor performs a bunionectomy to correct the deformity. The doctor may also perform a sesamoidectomy, which is the removal of small bones near the joint that may have become damaged or inflamed.
