A lumbar or sacral transforaminal epidural steroid injection (TFESI) is a pain management procedure where a doctor injects corticosteroids (anti-inflammatory medication) with a small-gauge blunt needle into the epidural area. When it is done from the side where the nerve exits the spine, it is called a transforaminal injection. It puts medication near the source of the inflammation.
