Laparoscopic tubal sterilization, also known as having your tubes tied, is a surgical procedure to block the fallopian tubes to prevent pregnancy. During surgery, a small incision is made near the navel. A laparoscope, a thin viewing tube, is passed through the incision to make the organs easier to view. A special device to grasp the fallopian tubes is inserted through a second, small incision, and is used to either make the tubes clot or band them together. Tubal sterilization is considered a permanent form of birth control.
