A facet injection is a minimally invasive procedure used to diagnose and treat pain stemming from the small joints located along the spine, called facet joints. These joints can become inflamed due to arthritis, injury, or other conditions, leading to neck, mid-back, or lower back pain.
During the procedure, a combination of a local anesthetic and a steroid medication is injected directly into the affected facet joint under imaging guidance (such as fluoroscopy or CT). The injection helps reduce inflammation and pain, and can also help your doctor determine if the facet joint is the source of your discomfort.
