Sigmoidoscopy

A sigmoidoscopy is a medical procedure used to examine the lower part of the large intestine (colon) and rectum. It involves inserting a flexible tube with a small camera (sigmoidoscope) into the rectum to view the lining of the sigmoid colon and rectum. Sigmoidoscopy is typically performed to diagnose or screen for conditions such as colorectal cancer, polyps, inflammation, or bleeding. It is a relatively quick and minimally invasive procedure often done without sedation, although discomfort may occur.
